What does it mean to be purpose oriented? It means that you prioritize work that matters to you, your company and the world. Purpose can be found in every job and industry.
Purpose is the reason for which something is done. ‘Why’ we do a certain work matters more than ‘what’ we do. Our success isn’t just the sum of all we do in a given day or year because excellence isn’t a list of to-do’s. To excel in a field we need to be purpose driven.
When you know the purpose behind your work, you tend to live a more meaningful existence than those who don’t. You tend to live each day to the fullest, because you know who you are, where you’re coming from and where you’re going.
There are several ways to make a billion dollars but the most interesting and respected work is the one with the strongest and the most authentic purposes behind them.
Purpose makes strategy more meaningful- It is the reason for which the company exists beyond making money. It is what a company stands for, what makes it different from its competitors- not just what is written on a website, but what is known to be true because it shows up in moments that matter, consistently, for employees, customers and other stake holders.
A purpose mobilizes people in a way that pursuing profit alone never will. For a company to thrive, it needs to infuse its purpose in all that it does. An organization without purpose manages people and resources, while an organization with purpose mobilizes people and resources. Purpose is a key ingredient for a strong, sustainable, scalable organizational culture. It’s an unseen-yet-ever-present element that drives an organization.
A question I’d like to put forward is ‘Why do you wake up in the morning and why should anyone care?’
In today’s generation, millennials want a reason behind a career or their investments. They want a purpose. Some of the fastest growing careers for millennials are with companies that place value in the purpose of the work rather than the income. This new drive and focus in the workplace is shifting how companies attract millennials. On the other hand senior level heads and CEO’s are more frustrated with their work load and the basic reason behind this is that back then they did not have the drive for purpose, the selection of their jobs were done on the basis of income and not purpose.
“My passion needed purpose that is rippling into areas bigger than me. I do have my moments of distractions, but my purpose gets me back on track to focus on what is important”. Purpose driven work is nothing but having put your passion and profession together.
Any work that we choose to do must have some meaning to it, there must be a purpose behind every work that we do or else the work has no value. Life is short and you deserve to work in a role where your personal purpose shines. It really does come down to you defining and executing your purpose.
It is very rightly said by Billy Cox “If you want to stay motivated you must be working for a purpose. Make sure every day you make a difference”.
